A Maria Irudayam is arguably India’s greatest carrom champion. Born in the year 1956 in Chennai; he started playing professional carrom at the age of 16 and went on to write history by becoming the only Indian carrom player in India to have won the prestigious Arjuna Award in 1996, the highest sporting award in the country.

His passion for the game led him to win not one but multiple awards. In this blog post, we are going to look at some of his achievements that’s sure to leave you awestruck with the feats this champion of champions managed to achieve in his illustrious career.

At 25, he won the state carrom championship trophy, which was his first significant achievement and never really stopped after that.

He won the state-level championship for a record 10 times during 1982-1983 and has won the national championship 4 times, including a record 9 senior national titles.

A Maria Irudayam is a name to reckon with when it comes to carrom, and he’s achievements aren’t restricted to the Indian carrom scenario alone.

He was a part of the winning team in the international carrom federation cup and has also bagged the international player award by the German carrom federation.

All in all, he’s won 6 international gold medals, 3 international silver, and 3 international bronze medals. A feat, no other carrom player in India has been able to match.
